Term 2 Sports Report

Hockey - Grafton

The term started off extremely busy and successful for our sporting stars with 3 students being selected in North Coast teams/squads in the first week.

Hockey

One boy and six girls travelled to Grafton for the North Coast hockey trials. The students played in three games against the other zones in the North Coast. All tried extremely hard with Maddison and Willow being selected to represent the North Coast at the State trials in Week 5 at Unanderra. Willow and Maddison were triumphant in being in the North Coast team which became joint winners with Sydney North in the State Hockey Championships. Willow shone being named captain in the grand final as well as earning selection in the State team.

On Friday, 11 June, our mixed hockey team (entered in the boys competition) travelled to Grafton for Round 2 of the statewide knocout hockey competition. Facing a tough and experienced South Grafton, our team pushed them early but were unable to convert. South Grafton then settled and through some sustained attack converted. South Grafton went on to win the match 4 nil. Our team then had a friendly game against Westlawn. Unfortunately, we were unable to convert our opportunities due to some brilliant goal keeping from the opposing team and Westlawn made the most of their chances winning the match. Our team played exceptionally well on the day considering that we were playing in the boys' competition, we had several inexperienced players and some players who had not played a game of hockey on a full sized field.

Rugby League

Harrison travelled to Coffs Harbour to compete in the North Coast Rugby league trials. Harry was successful in being selected in a 26 player development squad to attend a rugby league camp at Lennox Head in mid May where this squad was culled to 17 players to represent the North Coast. He was successfully selected to represent the North Coast at the State Championships in Tamworth in mid June.

Soccer

4 students, 3 boys and 1 girl attend the regional soccer trials at Grafton. Despite none of the students being successful, they all played extremely well and demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship.

The boys’ and girls’ school soccer teams also started their campaign in the state wide PSSA knockout competitions. They had large wins over South Lismore with the boys winning 10-0 and the girls up 8-0 at half time before making the second half a friendly game sharing players. In the next round, with both teams playing Kyogle, the girls lost 5-0 while the boys won 13-0.

In the next round, the boys versed Bexhill Public and once again proved too strong winning 6-0. The boys team completed two more games with convincing wins. They are now in the final 16 teams in the state.

Netball

Early in May, 4 girls attend the Zone netball trials in Lismore. The students tried their hardest and showed a pleasing level of skill however, they were not successful in being selected.

The school Knock-out team played Casino West in their first round and lost 12-4 in a tight match.

Cricket

The boys continued their dominance in the PSSA knock-out cricket convincingly defeating Dunoon Public School, WRPS 6/156 dft Dunoon 3/74, which made them progress to the best 16 teams in the state.

Touch Football

Illuka hosted the girls’ touch football trials where 5 students attended. Kitty was successfully selected into the Northern Rivers zone team and attended the trials at Grafton. Although she played well, Kitty was not selected into the regional team.

We played Casino West in the State wide P.S.S.A. knock-out girls’ competition and had a narrow loss.

Softball

On a wet and cool day, 5 students attended the Northern River softball trials in Lismore. They were asked to demonstrate their skills through numerous drills and game situations. All 5 were selected to trail for the North Coast team early next term in Lismore.

Rugby Union

5 students attended the Northern Rivers Rugby Union trials in Lismore, run by one of our own staff members. There were approximately 40 students trying out. The boys were asked to demonstrate their skills, teamwork, communication and team play. Despite our students performing well none were selected however, they all have another opportunity next year as they were all from Year 5.

He jumped an amazing 1.37m with the previous record being set in 2020 at 1.34m. A team of 45 students, including one A.W.D.
