Rugby League
On a horribly wet day (not only was it raining but there was water pooled on the playing surface) Mason and Mathew tried out for the North Coast Rugby League teams. Mason in the 11yrs and Mathew in the Opens. Both boys played several games against the other zones. Congratulations to Mason who was selected to represent the North Coast at the State Championships to be held in Sydney later this term.
Cricket
Well done to the boys’ cricket team who played Goonellabah in earl term 2. The boys displayed team spirit and fantastic sportsmanship. Our school batted first and scored 162 runs for the loss of 1 wicket after 25 overs. Our team then bowled and fielded very well and bowled Goonellabah out for 80 runs.
Netball
On Wednesday, 10 May the WRPS netball team, made up of Year 5 and 6 girls, competed in the Northern Rivers Zone Netball Trials. The students had a lot of fun with all of them achieving success, whether it be learning new skills or advancing to the next selection stage. Congratulations to Lily and Ashtynn who were named in the top 20 Possibles and Probables squad and Addison who was selected to represent the Northern Rivers at the North Coast trials.
Congratulations to Addison and Ashtynn who attended the North Coast netball trials at Coffs Harbour. The girls played three tough games against the other zones. From these games, Possible and Probables teams were decided and played each other. Addison was successful in being selected in this game but unfortunately did not get chosen into the North Coast team. Both girls performed extremely well and enjoyed the experience.
In mid June, Tyler attended the state netball trials for boys in Sydney. He was the only boy from the North Coast in attendance and despite not being selected and enjoyed the experience and gained a lot of knowledge.
In the PSSA Knock-out competition, the girls played Lismore Heights. Our girls skill and knowledge shone as the girls defeated their opponents 26-1. In the next round, the girls faced a much stronger team in Lismore Public. The play was extremely tight which was reflected in the scoreline with Lismore Public winning by just one goal.
State Touch Football
Last week, Mason travelled to Sydney to compete in the State Touch Football Championships. He represented the North Coast which covers an area from Port Macquarie to the QLD border and he was the only yr 5 student in the team. The games were tough as many of the Sydney teams meet regularly to train. On the first day, North Coast lost all their games. On the second day, they won and had a few draws. Mason thoroughly enjoyed the experience and his skills, fitness and positive attitude/sportsmanship were rewarded when he was awarded the "Coach's Award" for his team.
Soccer
Our girls’ and boys PSSA knock-out school teams continue to progress in the state-wide competition. The Boys’ Soccer team played their first round match against Lismore South. The boys played together well and passed the ball around, showing a lot of potential. The final score was a 6-1 victory to Wyrallah Road. They next played Dunoon. In another strong game, the boys finished off their chances winning 7-0. The boys finished the term be soundly defeating a combined Caniaba Small Schools team 8-0. They will continue in the State-wide Knockout competition next term.
Congratulations to our girls' soccer team who came away with a massive win over South Lismore Public School in the first round of the PSSA Knock-out competition. The girls' played in hot conditions and demonstrated teamwork, skill and accuracy when passing. The score ended up 14-0 in our favour. In the second round, our girls pace and skill continued to shine with another dominate performance beating Bexhill 7-1. The girls’ teamwork, skill and speed again shone through when they defeated Kyogle 14-0. The next round was a tougher experience with our girls facing an experienced Lismore Public. The game was extremely tight with extra time needed to decide a winner with Lismore Public winning 2-1.
Hockey
During week 6, Rose and Emilie represented the North Coast at the State Hockey Championships at Tamworth. The girls played 6 games against other regional teams. They won 2 games and narrowly lost 4. This placed them 7th overall. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope to have future representative honours
Softball
Three students, 2 boys(Henry and Talon) and one girl (Macie) attended the zone softball trials in Lismore. All three were selected in the Northern Rivers team and trialled at the North Coast selections at the Lismore softball complex. Henry and Macie, were then selected to represent the region at the Sate championships late next term. Henry will travel to Woolaware and Macie will travel to Mayfield.
Rugby Union
In mid June, four students trialled for the Northern Rivers Zone Union team. The boys performed many skills and fitness drills as well as playing games. They enjoyed the opportunity with Mason being selected to represent the Zone at Grafton in the North Coast trials. In these trials, Mason played 3 games as half back. His high level of fitness, skills, teamwork and sportsmanship shone through and despite only being in year 5 Mason was selected to represent the North Coast at the State Championships to be held mid next term in Camden.
Cross Country
The zone cross country was held at the Lismore Race Course. It was a beautiful day for running and our 49 athletes performed extremely well and were exceptionally well behaved. Athletics
The cheers were loud, and the students were running, jumping and pushing hard. It was wonderful to once again host our school athletics carnival with no restrictions and it was a perfect day for competing. Students tried their hardest as they were encouraged by their teammates and their relatives. The day was a success due to the brilliant help that was supplied by Richmond River High School students who assisted with time keeping and field events along with those family members who assisted in the canteen. 34 athletes have been selected to represent our school next term at the Zone carnival.
