Term 3 Sports Report

The term started off with Sydney being in lockdown which at first halted our sport however, after a week we were back into our activities with gusto…until Tuesday Week 5 when everybody was in lockdown. However, we didn’t let lock down stop us exploring the sporting world.

Soccer

The boys’ school soccer team continued their campaign in the state wide PSSA knockout competition. They had a large win over Yamba with the boys winning 7-0. In the next round, the semi-final of the North Coast, the boys played a very skilful team, Lennox Head, and were narrowly defeated 2-0. The boys’ did a remarkable job being in the top 32 teams in N.S.W.

Softball

Five boys travelled to Albert Park Softball fields for the North Coast softball trials. The boys were rated according to their skills (fielding and batting), their ability to work as part of a team, attitude/effort and sportsmanship. After a tough selection, Kye was successfully chosen to be part of the North Coast team. The other four the boys will have another opportunity to try out again next year as they are only in year 5.

Basketball

In the state wide P.S.S.A. knockout competition our boys continued their success from Term 2. They were too strong for Lismore Pubic winning 40-24. The boys then took on a determined Kyogle team in Round 4, narrowly defeating them by 2 points. The boys’ commitment to training at recess times and after school has certainly paid off.

Zone Athletics

A team of 44 students, including one A.W.D. (athlete with a disability) was to compete at the Zone carnival in Lismore in August. We now await to see if this carnival will be rescheduled.

Stage 2 Sport

Stage 2 students, students from years 3 and 4, enthusiastically participated in tennis for the whole term. Once a week, for 30minutes each class had expert coaching in the aspects of tennis. The students thoroughly enjoyed all the activities.

Stage 3 Sport

Students from stage 3, including students from 4/5E, participated in Community Sport for 5 weeks. The students were able to choose their activity from gymnastics, skating, tennis, ten pin bowling or walking. At most activities, the students received expert coaching about the finer points/techniques of the sport. The students were thrilled to have this opportunity.

Sport and Fitness in Lock Down

The students were not held back during lock down but were encouraged more than ever to participate in some form of physical activity each day especially outside. Students were given daily challenges along with sporting skill examples and skills to attempt and also encouraged to share their own exercise examples which included roller blading, skating, skate boarding, running, playing footy, walking, kicking a ball around, juggling and swimming. Stage 3 joined a webinar which involved NSW Breakers cricket player Sammy-Jo Johnson for a half an hour information session. They learned about what inspired Sammy-Jo in her sporting endeavours, what a typical week of training looked like, how she achieved her success, what sports Sammy-Jo enjoys and what she does outside of cricket. Sammy-Jo also gave students advice on participating in sport and life which included making sure you enjoy what you do, train hard but also manage a sport life balance and that everyone experiences obstacles you just have to work out how to overcome them. She also highlighted the importance of family support.
