Stage 1 Science Day

Last Friday, students from Year 1 and 2 formed collaborative learning teams and had a full day of investigating five separate activities around the general theme of water and liquids.

Our students moved from one activity to the next throughout the day and the excitement was obvious! The mystery and wonder of scientific inquiry filled their thoughts and discussions. Teachers and support staff allowed the collaborative learning teams enough time for thought and predictions before each investigation. Student learning was further supported through demonstration, discussion, experience, diagrams and explanation.

Exploring and investigating our world is what science is all about, children are born scientists. Our junior scientists produced predictions, explanations, observations and further questions to be answered as they investigated scientific concepts such as: precipitation, forces, erosion, density, sinking, floating, surface area, surface tension, mixtures, heating/cooling and the properties of liquids and solids.

This science day and our upcoming excursion links with our integrated unit this term, `Cool Australia’. During this term, our students will explore how water is accessed, used sustainably and conduct geographical inquiry into the major water sources in Australia. Scientific concepts such as evaporation, condensation, precipitation, erosion, run-off and the role of water in plant survival will also be investigated.

We are already considering another Science Day later in the year, so watch this space, the lab coats might be on again!
