Premier's Debating Challenge

Should parents force their kids to do two hours of community service each week or should two seats be reserved in parliament for school-aged students? They were just two of the topics our debaters could have selected to tackle on Monday as part of the Premier's Debating Challenge. The students participated in a gala day which saw them participate in 2 debates. Their first debates were against the two teams from Lismore Heights. The Arguers debated Lismore Heights Green with the Topic being "That male and female parents should be forced to spend equal amounts of time looking after their home and kids". The Arguers were the negative team. Both teams presented several arguments with Lismore Heights taking the win.
The Persuaders debated Lismore Heights Grey and the topic was "That we should never allow any primary school-aged person to have or use money" and The Persuaders were the affirmative team. Retrovailles' strong presentation as the third speaker allowed the Persuaders to narrowly win.
The Arguers' second debate was against Lismore Heights Grey and the topic was "That schools should require all teachers to be fit non-smokers and the Arguers were the negative team. The Arguers' more detailed and varied arguments and better attempts at rebuttals allowed them to win the debate.
The Persuaders' final debate was against the Woodenbong Yowies and the topic was "That Year 5 and 6 kids should do weekly cooking classes" and the Persuaders were the negative team. With strong arguments, persuasive rebuttals and some catchy phrases and examples the Persuaders won the debate.
With four wins from two gala days, the Persuaders have won the zone and will now debate another zone winner.
Both teams gave up many lunch times to improve their knowledge and skills. This effort resulted in excellent teamwork and improved skills and knowledge.
