Music in Schools - Big Play Day

Last Friday, 37 WRPS students participated in the inaugural Music In School Big Play Day at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium. Each of these students is currently learning an instrument here at school in lessons conducted by professional tutors from the conservatorium. Students gathered with other schools from across the region, who also partner with the conservatorium, to rehearse and perform in a range of ensembles showcasing their performance skills.

After two short rehearsal sessions, students moved outside to provide a free public concert outside the New Regional Art Gallery and their music was joyfully received by those watching and listening.

For some of our more experienced students, this was an opportunity to lead and mentor newer instrumentalists and experience performing under the baton of a new conductor. For many of our instrumentalists, this was their first time playing with a large ensemble and experiencing what it is to work within a team of musicians - a task that was daunting for many of them, but one that they all took in their stride.

WRPS students are to be commended not just for their respectful, responsible and safe behaviour on the day, but also their willingness to have a go and try something new and different.

For students in Years 3-6 wishing to join our instrumental program Expressions of Interest for our 2019 program will be distributed in the coming weeks. We have tuition available on violin, cello, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet and trombone.

What some of the students said about The Big Play Day:

Elijah: I learned to play C,B,C.

Louanna: The best thing about today was hanging out with my friends and playing my cello.

Connor: I learned that when you play outside your music can blow away easily. Always carry pegs!
