Premier’s Debating Challenge

Should toys that look like weapons be banned?  Should every schoolkid play in a weekend sport team competition and should students do two hours of charity work a week?

Yesterday, our school debating teams, the Arguers and the Persuaders, travelled to Alstonville Public School to participate in Rounds 3 and 4 of the Premier's Debating Challenge for Years 5 and 6. In the first debate, the Persuaders versed Empire Vale. The topic was ‘That students should do two hours of charity work a week' and the Persuaders were the negative team. It was an extremely close debate, with the adjudicators taking many minutes to decide a winner, Empire Vale. The Arguers then debated Bonalbo Central with the topic being ‘That we should ban all toys that look like weapons'. The Arguers were the negative team and their better rebuttals allowed them to win the debate.  The Arguers and the Persuaders then debated each other. The topic was ‘That every schoolkid should play in a weekend sport team competition' and the Arguers were the Affirmative team. Both teams presented some very sound arguments and had some good rebuttals with the Persuaders narrowly winning.

We had lots of fun and thank Mrs Maguren for helping with transport.
