Premier's Debating Challenge

Premier's Debating Challenge

Last Friday, our school hosted the first two rounds of the Premier's Debating Challenge with students in Stage 3 from six different schools (each school's team having two debates). In the first round, the WRPS Arguers (Kiara, Madison, Charlotte M. and Charlotte B) were the Negative team against a very experienced Alstonville Public Blue team. The topic was ‘Primary schools should set aside one day a week for kids to study subjects that interest them'. The teams presented some creative and persuasive arguments with Alstonville winning the debate. The WRPS Persuaders (Skyla, Isabel, Harriet and Jack) also debated an experienced Alstonville Public Red team and were the Negative team for the topic ‘We should have separate schools for smarter kids'. Both teams argued strongly with the Alstonville team narrowly defeating the Persuaders. In round two, the Persuaders again were the Negative team against Woodburn Public with the topic being ‘Kids should only have 30 minutes of screen time each school day'. Again both teams presented strong arguments, however, this time the Persuaders were more persuasive, winning the debate. The Arguers debated against Lismore Heights Public, ‘Kids Year 5 and above should be able to watch violent computers games' with the Arguers making a strong representation against the topic, winning the debate.

Congratulations to both teams for their wonderful efforts! Their improvement throughout the day in their matter (content) and manner (how they presented their information) and method (structure) were significant. They worked exceptionally well within their teams and were extremely well behaved. Rounds three and four will be held early in term 3.
