Last Friday 14 June, the WRPS Girl’s Basketball team competed enthusiastically at the local PSSA Girls Basketball Gala Day. The girls were really playing well in their first match up against the A-team from Lismore Public School (LPS). It was quite obvious LPS had some skilful, experienced and tall players that played fair but physical. Despite some of our girls being half the size of their opponents, the WRPS team showed awesome effort and did not back down the entire game. In the last two quarters, the LPS team used their experience to maintain possession and keep their lead until the final whistle. Later, the LPS coach joined in and praised our girls on their amazing effort throughout the game. The score line for this game would prove to be the closest margin that any of the teams achieved against LPS.
Despite this first loss, our girls went on to convincingly defeat Alstonville PS and then another team fielded by LPS. The WRPS girls were especially good at zone defence, fast breaks, hustling for the ball and ‘free throw’ shooting. Our girls should be proud of their efforts, determination, teamwork and vocal encouragement from the sidelines. Their great sportsmanship showed as they thanked the coaches of opposing teams at the end of each game. With quite a few Year 5 students in the team, there is plenty of optimism for next year’s competition.
