RoboCup Jnr Search and Rescue Challenge

Last Friday, 16 students from Stage 2 and 3 attended the RoboCup Jnr Search and Rescue challenge at Southern Cross University. The children participated in a workshop where they learnt the basics of building and coding a robot. Students were then given time to build and program a robot that would compete in the search and rescue challenge. The challenge was a hypothetical scenario where the robot would need to navigate an outlined course and then remove hazardous waste from the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant disaster.

Our eight teams had a fantastic time creating their robots. It was wonderful to see their brains at work, using their problem solving skills to correct portions of their code when faced with new and increasingly challenging obstacles. Team ‘WRPS Success' led by Skyla Davis and Alexis Ryan came in second place, only a fraction behind Nimbin High School. We also had team ‘WRPS ZCM' led by Zachariah Roberts, Chillarah Ackrell and Malachi Maxwell in fourth position. What an awesome outcome from our very first competition, well done! Mr. Platt

‘Shoom' the robot shuddered down the track. On Friday the 16th of June 16 students walked down to the Southern Cross University for the RoboCup search and rescue challenge. We built a new robot and we had to code it to follow a black line. We had to check and test the code over and over again. Eventually W.R.P.S students got theirs to work. In the contest Alexis and I came second losing to three high school kids. If we had won we  would have gone to Sydney. Then we had a harder non competitive round. Most high schools had left and Lexi and I tied for first with Malachai, Zachariah and Chillara. We all had a great day! By Skyla Davis
