Aboriginal Art Workshop

Last week, three students from our school attended an Aboriginal Art Workshop at Albert Park Public School.  The children learnt about Aboriginal stories based on the Bundjalung Creation.  The following story was told to them by Adrian Harrington.

"Our land and rivers were formed by the serpent and along his travels to the Nimbin area he did something bad and which still remains a secret.  The old Warrior from Nimbin called on Dirrawong the Goanna to chase the serpent away.  When he chased the serpent from the Nimbin area, the serpent then made his way to Chinamans Beach at Evans Head making many landforms and rivers along the way.  The serpent was chased by Dirrawong out to sea and this is where he shed his scales into the sky making the milky way and the stars. Dirrawong now rests at what we now know today as Goanna Headland at Evans Head keeping a look out for the serpent. The circles in the middle of the goanna and the serpent represents the Lismore Bora Ring which is now known as the Lismore Showground.  This was a significant Aboriginal meeting place in the local area."

Adrian explained to the children on the day that as Aboriginal stories were passed down orally from generation to generation this is why there a different versions of this story but the main parts and the parts of significance will remain the same.

The students then had the opportunity to express this story through their artwork.
