On Thursday 30 June our Aboriginal students in years K-6 and our senior Dance Ensemble headed to the Lismore Showground to celebrate NAIDOC Week with our local community. All students performed well and enjoyed the activities on offer throughout the day. Congratulations to the following students who received NAIDOC awards, Madison and Clay for being reliable friends and Aliya and Braedon for being great role models.
NAIDOC celebrations continued the following day at school with students dressing up - our school looked like a wonderful sea of red, black and yellow!
The day was opened with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Hazel Rhodes who is a local Aboriginal Elder and one of the custodians of the Bundjalung Nation.
During our morning assembly some of our students were recognised for their academic achievements and community involvement. Congratulations to Shontali for receiving the school's newest award, ‘The Aliya King Leadership Award'. This award will be presented annually to a Year 4 student during NAIDOC Week and guarantees the awardee the opportunity to attend the Student Leadership Conference the following year.
After our assembly the students participated in a variety of activities focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Our parents and community members joined in these activities with some of our Dads showing off their football skills and sharing these with the students.
